I bought these on EB because I really liked the look of them (and they were pretty cheap) I am guessing that they are pretty common?

Are there any particularly interesting ones in this lot? (from a precancel point of view)

Thanks in advance for any help and/or suggestions for further study.

You are right! All are very common. A good mixture of Bureaus and Non-bureaus mostly in the 15 to 25 cent range.

Thank you frankie and stamperdude, I am not disappointed by your evaluation at all as I still like them (which is strange as I usually stay away from overprints). I see that there a are a few threads in this section about collecting precancels, so I will be doing a lot more to studying before I venture out into another purchase. e.g. finding out the difference between Bureau and Non-bureau; :-)

Thanks for your inputs.

I like them, too! Here's a link to an excellent site with much information on US precancels:

http://www.precancels.com/

Noting that you are from Australia, are you particularly interested in US precancels or precancels from other countries? There are a number of web sites can offer you valuable information.

US precancels can sometimes be overwhelming to a new collector, as there are thousands of different cities/towns represented and virtually millions of different types of precancels out there, so many new to the field try to specialize in certain precancel styles or collect them from certain US States, etc., to narrow down the field a bit.

Anyway, there are many Stamp Collecting Forum members that can help you along with any questions you may have, so just feel free to ask.

Thank you very much wt1, it was that link that I was referring to and I thank you for it.

It is the US precancels that interest me at the moment...I had visualized starting off by trying to get at least one precancel from every capital city of every US state.

I read last night that precancels from Alaska are like hen's teeth, still worth a try and should not be too complicated as long as I don't focus on the different types, at least initially.

I recently acquired a m/s with all the US States bird and flower emblems and I could imitate that with a precancel collection.

A very attractive addition to my birds thematic.

cheers

I have a collection of Pennsylvania precancels -- representing 92 different cities and towns -- not to mention different types used in each town -- but it only touches the surface of all of the precanceled stamps that State had used. They were one of the most prolific States to issue precanceled stamps. In fact, reference has been made to Philadelphia, where there are no less than 78 different types of precanceled stamps all from that city alone! (Quite a challenge to get anywhere near finding them all.)

I only have one from Philadelphia, which is strange considering they issued 70+ different ones, whereas I seem to have a few from NY.

Reading,PA...why does that sound so familiar? Was a book or a movie or a TV show set in 'Reading PA', anyone know?

In the board game Monopoly, popular here in the USA, there is a 'property' called the Reading Railroad. You can draw a chance card that says "Take a ride on the Reading Railroad".

Yes, it's a great game, most probably it is popular everywhere, maybe even our alien visitors have adapted it to their world. It could be where I have seen the name, though in Australia it is more common that we play the game with English streets and places.

thanks

:)
