Going through some more "stuff" I find this 1928 dedication cover and was wondering how it was delivered. The addressee name has been covered over by the 2 Harding imperf stamps (610). In addition, these 2 stamps are canceled at the same time as the 1 cent Franklin (552) with the Portland, Main cancellation. To make matters more interesting is the initial cancellation from TX on the C11 Air Mail. Finally, it has 2 receiving stamps on the back from Houston, Texas & Hartford, Conn. Though marked $8.00 I don't think I paid that much for it and it was a long time ago.

It looks like a "Fe" at Berkshire Exchange. I guess they just asked if there was a "F" there during mailcall.

"The Berkshire Exchange, Cummington, Mass." is visible even with the stamps obliterating the rest of the address. I suspect it was delivered with that partial address, especially since Cummington is a town (even today) with a population of under 1000 people.

In its day (1920's to 1930's), "The Berkshire Exchange" of Cummington, Mass. was the publisher of this catalogue, which may help to further explain the reason for the cover:

Quote:
The American catalogue of air mail and first day covers

Cummington,Mass.: Berkshire Exchange, 1929.

Given wt1's identification of the Berkshire Exchange as an entity, the obscured word may simply be "For"

Whatever it says beneath the stamps will remain undiscovered. I intend to keep it the way it is and not lift the stamps.

Another piece of trivia related to the above cover: You have the Portland, ME duplex cancel of September 28, 1928 and the Portland Airport Dedication rubber stamp ... all of which led me to the following Scarborough (ME) Historical Society write up on the event (fascinating reading, although some may find it "information overload"):
