Here are three Type 225 precanceled stamps from Youngstown Ohio of the same series but different denominations.

The center stamp does not have a period following the State name; both stamps on the left and the right side do.

Is this just a minor variety or was there a specific reason why some Type 225 precancels carried the period and others did not?

Note 1 regarding Electroplates state that punctuation is optional, so I'm wondering if Type 225 can come with and without the period. As far as I know 225 is the only type that fits this style.

Note 1 in PSS T&T Catalog states "punctuation is optional".

According to specialized catalogs, on this type: the 7th stamp in the 2nd row had no period. So it is a scarce, constant, variety - good find! This is NOT the Note-1 situation where all the images on the device would have the same punctuation. It is Note-5 - some punctuation varies WITHIN the device.

Thanks to all for this information.

Chasa: Are you saying that the 13-cent denomination scanned above is the 7th stamp in the 2nd row of the pane? What is meant by "scarce"? Does it have any monetary value above the others or is it just an oddity for this precancel type?

What Frankie & I were referring too was the note listed on page (8) below descriptions in the T&T catalog.

What chasa is pointing out, which is the correct way to read this, when looking at type 225 under Youngstown there is a (5) assigned to it.
The (5) means "Punctuations variations exist within the device" this is found on page -vii- in the PSS T&T Catalog.
Any number like this listed after the type & noted under the city/po you should refer back to that page to see if applies to your copy.
I knew this & blew it!

Yes, this precancel device was a big fellow, it was 10x10 size, doing 100 at a time.
On one of the 100 images, they forgot the period.
I suspect any Ohio specialist would pay a dollar for it, rather than a nickel with the period, so it is effectively just an oddity. If it were from Alabama, I might even pay 2$!

Thanks again for the information. I guess it won't help my retirement fund much, but at least I know it's an oddity that is less common than the norm.
