Hi Gerry,

A quick look at the Scott catalog

Left : Scott 95 - 10c Claret (Cat Value $0.30)
Right : Scott 157 - 50c on 55c (Cat Value $10)

Surcharges and overprints are used for various reasons including using up old stock to save on printing, Changes in currency, changes in postal prices, signify an event.

Drew

Italian stamps have been overprinted from time to time. It is relatively normal, though I cannot speak to the rariity of the stamp in question.

Italy is not my field - and cat value can be far off from market value. The stamp also has rough/torn bottom right corner which would significantly reduce the value.

Condition Condition Condition Gerry has any particular country taken your eye or are you enjoying the whole world. You will find once you start to learn more about stamps you will get a feel for your interests and the amount you can learn from stamps are endless. Enjoy the ride.

This seems a bit high for this stamp in used condition. I've bought a copy for less than AU$1. My 1980 () Gibbons has it listed at 1 pound used but 10 pounds mint.
