i have purist friends that would never buy a stamp that does not apply directly to their collecting interest...thats not me !! I buy stamps that work in my collections and at times I will buy a group of stamps and just set them aside...someone may want them in the future...and believe me the future has been 15 years at times....whatever interests us..thats what we do...i won't bankrupt anyone with my strange habits !!
Those aren't "strange" habits. I would do it, too.
How does one know that to buy a different type of stamp, different country or different topic, or even some Cinderellas won't get you into specializing in those collecting interests in the future? Collect what you like. There are no rules. The stamps you may consider "junk" today, maybe worthwhile to you tomorrow.
I can personally attest to being given boxes of precancels and postmarks and covers that were stored away for quite awhile and only in recent years have I discovered postmark collecting and precancel collecting and cover collecting as an inexpensive and rewarding sideline to my main stamp collection.
Most likely it may never become significantly "valuable" in terms of money; but the reward in acquiring them, sorting through them, mounting them, etc., more than compensates. After all, it's my hobby!
philb I was what you call a 100 percent purist just, buying what I need for my collections. SCF change me. Now I don't look anymore at used stamps as being generally worthless. I discover cancels study and precancels. I recognise myself in what wt1 wrote. Also I start selling on SCF what I don't want a keep anymore or if I simply need money. Knowing that you can eventually sell influence your buying habit.
I can relate to something similar along thee lines too.
I am not one to follow current or past activities of the royal family. I have nothing against them, but I am just not into collec tibles about them. However, one day while I was at the library in town here, they were having a 'discarded books' sale and I noticed this one book about the 1939 Royal Visit to North America. I don't even know why I bought it but, I did and it was for a whopping 25 cents too <G>
Several years after I bought the book, I decided to collect the cover from the 1939 RV only and all I can tell you is that this book sure had a wealth of information that helped me a lot.
