Hi to all This was in the collection of 50 I bought the other day. I am only posting it because it is amazing how many persons do not know who Peter Stuyvesant was and only think of the Cigarettes named after him. Most people think that Benjamin Franklin founded the Volunteer Firebrigade when it was Stuyvesant and most people are unaware that he actually founded New York, and I think it was originally called New Amesterdam. You also get your term Yankee from the Dutch, Yan Kee, not sure of the spelling was a very shrewd business person and other traders would refer to him as that damned Yan kee when he beat them in a business deal, and eventually it got ised into Yankee. That's a great cover. I remember reading about Peter Stuyvesant as a child in this book: I had no idea there were cigarettes named for him! The story about how the word "yankee" came about is fascinating. |

I've never smoked, but I found the reference to the Stuyvesant cigarettes a bit intriguing, so I looked it up only to find that they were never marketed in the United States. Here is an ad from Australia (circa 1970) for the product: Interestingly, I did find reference to the Riggio Tobacco Company "test marketing" the Stuyvesant brand to a limited New York market around 1957, but it was apparently a failure as it would seem the brand name never caught on in that area. |

I remember them in Canada here. Never had any but I remember the name striking me as some fancy European type of cigarette or something. Perhaps for artists or such. lol The things you think of. |

Back to the stamp aspect of this thread, the First Day Cover is a Mellone #7 (Fulton Stamp Company cachet). |

Hi to all
Thank you all for your help. Interesting enough I think the Stuyvesant Brand was originally from Britain as you see it advertised in the old copies of the Illustrated London News. It is interesting to note, that the closer you are to some important historical event, the less the locals know about it. That even happens here in Australia. I bet if you asked most Australians who was the Earliest recorded English person to sail to Australia, most would say Captain Cook, but It was actually the Buccaneer William Dampier who was actually acting on the orders of the King of England. Even he was using Portuguese Maps, as was Cook. Regards Horamakhet

I was born about 5 miles from where William Dampier was baptised. I don't suppose that is interesting but I always find it rather cool.
Peter Stuyvesant was always marketed as cigarettes for the extremely sophisticated, generally models were shown smoking in casinos, from Milan to Monaco.
Another Irony when you consider gambling with Lung disease.
I wasn't aware Stuyvesant was involved in Fire prevention.

Hi Rod222 Its the little quirks in Philately like Stuyvesant and others that make it interesting. It like a quote that some-times you see attributed to John F Kennedy about having to prepare for war to keep the peace, He pinched it from Ben Franklin whole pinched it from Junius Brutus in about 345BC, (Yes he was an ancestor of the infamous Brutus who took part in the conspiracy to kill Caesar, although a lot of Historians do not believe he actually took part) The original quote was Let he who desires peace, let him first prepare for war.
