hi all i am still sorting and noticed this 905. i do not think it has any great value but thought it was a nice looking stamp and precancel. in these times I think that this stamp may just remind us a little about us always in a fight. it be a war or just in our everyday living.

Edit: Just realized the "905" you were referring to was the Scott # and not the precancel type. Anyway, the precancel looks to be a Type 236 for Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
In any event, it is a nice looking precancel. |

Precancel Types 236 and 237 both existed for Milwaukee. I was leaning toward the 236 since there is wider spacing between city and state name than on the 237. Is there reason to think otherwise? Or am I missing something? |

The 236 was used around 1917-27, where as 237 was used from 1917 to the 60's.

Thanks. Didn't know the date of usage info. So the precancel would have to be a Type 237 (unless someone had some real old precancel devices laying around). |

I have one of these with a precancel on it too. It's the statue of liberty (#899) and reads Brooklyn New York. |

Great looking precancel! I tend to believe it is a 237 as well.
warrehouse - is there a catalog that describes the dates precancels were used. I would find this extremely handy if there is one. Thanks.

Beezer, I referenced "Catalogue of the Printed Precancels of the United States" ED #2 by Bruce Brunell, 2006. This is limited to Locals L-types & 200's types.
The ranged mentioned above for the 237 type for Milw., WI was for that city/PO only. That type may have run longer or shorter time periods at other city/PO's using a 237, |

Measure the heigth of the letters; 2 mm makes it a 236 type; 1.8 mm and it is a 237 type. Have fun.
