When I first started collecting stamps about 1963 I had some stamps from East Germany (DDR). They had an "X" on them crossing out the value and a new value stamped on them. I don't remember if I got them in the Stamp Collecting Set my Mom bought me or if they came from a little orange bag I got at Longs. Anyway I thought I had some stamps that were errors and were worth a lot of money. Later I found out they were Scott #'s 216-223 and catalogued at .03. I think that was the min. for stamps at the time.

There may be hope yet for these stamps! Depending on the type of overprint (shiny or matte, etc, the value can range into three figures!

Here is a section out of my old 1994 Michel catalogue. Notice the values (in DM). The descriptions are all in German and not easy to decipher by me. I believe the new Michel catalogues are available in English.
