I'm currently sorting through my Brazilian stamps. I haven't worked out how to read the Scott listings, however. If you look at this example (see scan below), it doesn't specifically state that the DeGaulle stamp is unwatermarked, which it usually does when this is the case. So it's watermarked. But how are we meant to tell which watermark it has? Since it is watermarked, why does it only say that the JFK stamp is? This creates the perception that the De Gaulle stamp is different from this point of view. In fact, both stamps have the same watermark (267).

So why does it say only sometimes that the stamp has wmk 267, while saying nothing about others that have the exact same wmk?

Is this a problem that affects the entire catalogue or just the Brazil pages?

Hi jimjamtwo,

The rule in Scott is supposed to be that it only gives the watermark, perf or printing method if this has changed from the previous stamp.

I see no reason for the listing for Scott #987 to sat "Photo." or "Wmk. 267" although these are both true.

That's what I always thought. But the entries for this section of the Brazil part don't make sense like that, because the stamps are ALL Wmk 267 whether or not Scott states this specifically. When the watermark is given, therefore, no change is intended.

It's very confusing but must mean something, as it's apparently deliberate!!

I suspect it's just careless editing.

I've had a look at the "Understanding the Listings" info in the introduction to my 2009 Scott and this is still the rule.
