Hey All!
I have just received this folded letter. Here is what accompanied it. Please give me your thoughts, anyone care to venture on the value?
Ron
(1) 5c Red Brown, Tied by blue grid hand cancel on folded letter to Medina Ohio, blue Warren Ohio CDS, this is the only known 5c 1847 known to Medina, the stamp is Fine but appears to have some small faults, cover is folded down the middle, manuscript dated on the back Dec. 19th 1849, there is an ink spot on the face at the bottom left., a decent example of this scarce cover

Pics too small to read script but that is something I would give my left arm for! Literally! Man do you have a good eye! I'd love to browse your "brick & mortar" establishments' inventory in awe, of course! ~Jay

In the event you're interested the personality of the addressee:

Quote:
HISTORY OF MEDINA COUNTY, OHIO
William H. Canfield came to Medina about the year 1830, from Trumbull County. He studied law with Whittlesey & Newton, and was admitted to the bar about 1829 or 1830; he held the office of County Auditor for many years, in connection with the practice of the law. He was supposed to be a good lawyer, and either alone or in connection with his partners he had an extensive practice. In 1850, he was elected Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for five years, soon after which he removed to Kansas, where he was elected Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, in which capacity he served until his death in or about 1862 or 1863.

Thanks all, that have responded to this thread. But my original question still stands. What would you consider a fair market value? The Scv. $675.00 for the on cover stamp and the blue cancels add another $175.00. According to the original listing this is a quite scarce cover, but the Sc#1 is far from the nicest and I would only grade it average. After looking at the cover more closely, I feel it has quite a lot going for it. First it is a folded letter that was wax sealed with remaining remnants of the red wax. Next, it is on embossed letter head paper. Even though you most likely can not read the text, it is referencing events that happened in 1846 which makes it kind of cool. Sorry I can not up scale the entire letters text so that it is readable but here is a larger view of the signature.

Rather pricing the item only philatelically, you might want to consider an antique or other collectibles venues. Since it is dated 1846 or so, there could be a greater value to collectors of these type of items irrespective of the philatelic nature of this item.

Check out the right side of page 4 at this link. It seems to me the more information you could gather about the personality involved, would make the cover stand out even more as a collectible to not only philatelists but to those interested in 19th century period history. The named person (William H. Canfield) was a very highly respected citizen, lawyer and judge of his day, which should add a premium in and of itself.

I've only got Scott 2011 prices so that is what I'll use in trying to "price" your cover.

The "on cover" premium is $75 so add that to the $135 SCV for a VG (your grading) #1 and that gets you to $210.

Again, I'm only seeing a +$35 for a blue cancel (+$125 for a blue town) so you're now up to $245 "catalog value" -- $335 if you can count the town CDS on the far end of the cover as meeting the "town" cancellation criteria.

Add another $90 to the total SCV if you grade the stamp as Fine.

I'll let you decide what that translates to in the retail market.

If the letter is of interest, it would be helpful to use scans that people could read and/or provide a good description of the content.

From my own experience, if I can determine that the individual who wrote or received the cover is of some prominence, I'm willing to pay a little more -- so I agree that you should play up the historical aspect in your marketing approach.

Steve

Thanks to wt1, I went on line and started poking around the different Medina Ohio web sites. Low and behold, I have found what my turn out to be descendants of William H. Canfield. I left a msg. through their church, hopefully I will receive an answer from them.

tomiseksj!
Thank you for your input, but I already know the Scott values. A Sc#1 on cover is $675.00 plus $135.00 for the blue town cancel. Of course that is considering that the stamp is very fine, which this one is not. What I am really after is the fair market value.

If those are the current CVs then there has been a sizable appreciation since 2011 (+$75 on cover and +$10 for blue town).

As to fair market value, my intent was only to suggest that it is some percentage of the lower value -- maybe I should have just said that.

As to the cancel, if the stamp was off cover, it would be described as having a blue grid cancel. Does that change when the stamp is on cover but not tied by the town cancel?

Here's a nice tribute to the Hon. William H. Canfield as contained in The Journal of the Proceedings of the 12th Annual Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Kansas (that's a long title) as you will recall it was previously stated that Mr. Canfield moved from Medina, Ohio to be a Judge in Kansas and died there on February 26, 1874:

Quote:
We are thankful, too, that during all these years death has made but few inroads among our laity, and most of these beloved brethren, whom we have been accustomed to meet here, are still spared to us.

Yet one has left us, in the course of the past year, whose place it will be hard to fill — the Hon. William Canfield, of Junction City. Judge Canfield was emphatically a most valuable man, in his place on the bench, in society, and especially in the Church. Of great deliberation, of unusually clear judgment, of excellent learning, of a lovely Christian spirit, he was almost indispensable in our counsels; while his devotion to the Church, and his earnest love for her great Head, gave a sincerity and an enthusiasm to his influence which made it felt everywhere for good. His removal inflicts a severe loss upon this young Diocese, teaching us to rely, with humility and faith, upon the Infinite Source of all strength and grace, rather than upon the human instruments whom He may, from time to time, raise up for our help.

It's a nice cover, you got a great deal on it, I know because I forgot to bid on it and checked the price realized after the auction. I really enjoy those old 1847 issue covers! Hold on to it, nice piece of history.
