The title alone should get knees jerking all over the place. Unless I have missed something, there is no such thing. However, I came across this online auction for a "USA Sc 368, paste-up strips of four, VF NH CV 875$". I have contacted the seller with my thoughts on his auction :) For your enjoyment ...

Thhe 368 was issued as both 368H and 368V in imperforated coil rolls of both 500 and 1000. These were hand wound coils which would have been pasted-up and stripped by entire sheets into 20 coils. The top and bottom would be parallel in all 20 strips. The coils were normally provided to private perf manufacturers that did not strip their own.
The strip shown IS NOT GOVERNMENT ISSUE! |

Aha, now I know why I could not find anything on this. Russ you are a wealth of information to have. I think I just need a better philatelic library. |

Nevermind, I just found the section in Scott. 368H for horizontal, 368V for vertical.
Russ, I'd be interested in learning more about paste-up stamps. Have any information in your library?
(edit) You beat me to the answer again! |

Brian, paste-ups was used for 2 purposes; joining flat plate stamps to make coils of 500 or 1000 and joining partial sheets to make full sheets(rarely). The coil paste-ups were a lap joint either leading or trailing. A small portion of the margin was left on the top/left (leading) or bottom/right (trailing) Note that top-bottom is horizontal perf, left-right is vertical perfs. The adhesive gum from the one stamp is used to adhere it to the lap. The BEP actually made a few special plates for auto-wound coils that might help. Above is the plate proof for 1 cent coils Plate 6581 The auto-wound coil sheets were pasted-up and then split into half sheets in this case on the guideline in the center of the 9mm gutter. These sheets also were marked "COIL STAMPS" in left and right margins. Some plate stamps also had these markings (4-1cent and 4-2cent plates) These plates also had guidelines for the lap (trailing) |

I think Russ has perfected HG Wells' time machine and has dedicated his life to going back and recording everything related to US philately. I've previously asked Russ if he's a member of any expert committees.
Well, Russ? You said 'no'. I'd like to know why not?!? |
