Are you saying what looks like "IL" is actually a "VT" or "VT."?

I would never have figured that one out!

Definitely Saint Johnsbury, VT. The "VT" has a very tight condensed print for the State name on certain precancels which may be the cause for confusion.

After some personal precancel tutoring from Warrehouse, I can understand now how the second character of the state abbreviation could look like an L.

The state abbreviation has a dot or period at the end of the state initials. Somehow ink got between the T and the period in the state abbreviation for Vermont. If you look at the color-less version of the image I posted, you can see a small cross-bar at the top of the second letter (the T).

I agree with Chassa. Look at the first word under a good magnifying glass. It is definitely a five character word, ie. "Saint". The last 4 letters of Johnsbury are clearly "bury".
