1. I sort out all Hardings, Tafts, and 3 cent Washingtons (Stuart), and the compound perf Scot cat. #631. The green, yellow green color is very distinctive. It goes without saying you sort out anything that is not in the 1922-1926 series.
2. Then with stamps face down, I sort out the stamps with printing ink residue on the back of the stamp. This ink transfer is very common for the flat press printed perf 11's. Check some perfs so you will verify and feel comfortable with this. You can also watch for and sort the perf 10's as you do this.
3. Then perf chack and sort the rest of the stamps. If you buy in large quantities, or collections with a lot of this series, these steps will save you a lot of time as you don't have to check the perfs.
Thank you for that information it is a great help Once you know a perf of one stamp all you need to do is line them up to match. For example with the Australia George V the 1d violet, penny & half green 2d orange and 4d orange lemon and violet were apparently only ever issued on single watermark paper and are all perf 14 and apparently all the single watermarks from this era are perf 14 so knowing this it is easy to find all the George V perf 14 single watermark. So with these sort the watermarks first then check the perfs against one that you are holding as a master sample. Regards
Hello, Horamakhet. I have not persued foreign stamps for many years, but I learned to sort by watermarks early on. How are things Down Under? Love Australia. I was in Sydney 4 years ago. Beautiful city.
Down in Melbourne it is cold wet and windy. The economy is pretty good. I love Queensland, as I used to live there. I plan to go back there with the family to live in about five years. Stamp hunting is even better. I found a dealer who sells everything except the really rare items for ten cents each. He even let me take home a collection of US stamps that he had just bought and and sort through it and only pay ten cents a stamp. I took about 200 mostly 1890 to 1920 Regards Horamakhet
Wil Bobbin, thanks for your informative post..when things get slow with my main collecting interests I always dust off the precancels(the only thing I collect in U.S.) and go looking for a mixture on the internet..amazing how much in precancels is out there !!
