Is this the earliest dated use by any company?

I'd be interested in hearing from someone who may be more experienced in these than I am. According to this article, the whole concept of dated precancels only came into being in an experiment of June 1938, with national use in July 1938:

Therefore, it seems to me a a dated precancel prior to this should not exist. Could the date on the above example be April 1939? Or was it another test? Does anyone know who the user was with the initials CMO?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I have a few questions.

Is the above example the earliest known use by any company?
Does such an early date make it particularly valuable or sought after?
How many of these would have been produced in April 1938?
Did they exist with other company's initials?
How does this relate to the previously posted write-up on the precancels.com website suggesting that they didn't exist this early?

The 1st issue in 1938 was not stated in "Handstamp Dated Control" catalog, it is not April, it is later.
Collectors who collect first issues will value it higher, but in most cases no real difference.
None issued in April 1938.
July '38 is the 1st month of usaged.
So it should not relate!

I sent a copy of this scan to the editor of the dated catalog - he responded:

"There are stamps that are dated before July 38 in existence.

The dating device was set up improperly or in error.

These are not common-------but not unknown"

So this was not used in APR38 but it is a nice error find.

Thanks for clarifying this one. It helped me better understand how it fits in with the dates of official usage.

By the way, not being from the midwest, I had never had any knowledge of the Chicago Mail Order Co., so I pulled this brief history off of various internet sources:

Quote:
Aldens was established in 1889 under the name Chicago Mail Order and Millinery Company and was incorporated in Illinois on December 15, 1902. In 1906 the name of the business changed to Chicago Mail Order Company.

In the mid-1930s Aldens expanded its operations through acquisitions. It acquired the goodwill and mailing lists of M.W. Savage Company of Minneapolis in April 1935, Hamilton Garment of New York in May 1936, and D.T. Bohon of Kentucky in June 1936.

In 1936 Aldens began selling goods to its mail-order customers on a monthly payment plan. Besides its principal activity as a mail-order business, Aldens established offices for placing orders and began operating retail stores on an experimental basis. In 1938 sales totaled $24 million. The company initially specialized in the sale of apparel and accessories for women and men, especially fashion merchandise. Soon the company added curtains, sheets, pillowcases, tablecloths, fabrics, and book and toys. In 1938 these lines of goods were expanded to include home furnishings and house wares.

By 1943 Aldens had a main plant with 690,000 square feet of floor space in Chicago. The company extended its operations into the retail department store field in 1944 and over the next fifteen years opened sixteen stores, primarily in the Midwest. After World War II, apparel merchandise grew to represent a substantial portion of Alden's sales.

In 1946 the company changed its name to Aldens, Inc., and was the fourth-largest mail-order distributor in the United States. By 1957 sales for Aldens grew to $102.4 million as compared to $79.2 million in 1947. It employed 4,795 employees and now operated catalog telephone stores in 68 cities.

Beginning in 1961 the company began offering life insurance for sale through its catalog, operated by its wholly owned subsidiary, John Alden Life Insurance Company.

...and finally...

Quote:
Chicago Mail Order became known as Aldens, which in the 1970s was sold to Wicks Lumber, who closed the company in 1982.
