My oldest stamp in my new collection was not taken care of very well by the previous owner. Any clues to which one it is?
Thanks
Nick

Nick,

to SCF and glad to have you. and this one is a puzzler.
Its faded pretty bad but my guess would be a 65 . I only base that on that the most common A25 is the 65 and I don't see a grill.

Nick, this is the 1861 National Bank Note Co. printing (Scott 65). It is hard to determine the actual color due to toning and possible oxidation. A quick dip in 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 4 parts water (2-3 minute soak) with a 10 minute water rinse would probably help.

Hmm. No grills, and not sure why the left side is flat.

Nick, it will remove much of the toning and oxidation but it will not restore any color that may have been lost due to fading.

First off to the forum

I agree with Russ about your stamp being quite faded and toned. The peroxide might help with the toning but nothing can be done with the color.
I do believe that yours is Sc#65, and most likely there is no way to determine if it was another issue so it would be a safe one to try out the technique.
Best of luck, and if you do the peroxide clean please keep us posted how it comes out.

I wonder what all that bleaching is around the cancel ink? Or is it a reflection from Mylar in a vario sheet or glassine perhaps?
