I know when you buy a federal duck stamp the teller asks you if you are going to hunt and if you say yes they want you to sign it. If you want to keep it for your collection does that deface it?

Hello daviscfan......

The short answer is yes. But....some folks only collect them if they are signed, some only collect them if they are attached to a hunting tag. In this hobby each collector is absolutely free to decide for themselves what and how they will collect. There is no wrong way or item to collect.

If you want to buy current Federal Duck stamps for your collection you can purchase them on line from the US Postal Service. Sometimes they have back issues for two or three years available.

I and other members of our stamp club have had good luck at smaller Post Offices in our surrounding areas when our local PO is out-of-stock. Ordering from the "cave" can be interminably slow. The season may be closed before you get the required stamp. Our last Postmaster asked US when hunting season opened so she could be sure and order the Duck Stamps. We suggested that she order in June when they are released and she wasn't sure she wanted to hold them in stock that long.

Hi Everybody,

Duck stamps are actually Hunting Permit Stamps. They were authorized for collectors to purchase on June 15, 1935. You can buy one without hunting, but you can't hunt without buying! The revenues collected from their sale go to maintaining waterfowl life in the US.

Probably the reason why the clerk asks you to sign it if you're going hunting is to spare you a rather nasty fine from the Game Warden. If you're out in the weeds without a signed licence, technically, the license could belong to anyone. As well, it is likely considered to be an invalid licence until it is signed, as it does not show ownership by the person carrying it. Likely, one could be considred to be hunting without a license, which is definitely a no-no.

Luckily, in Canada, we don't need to sign our duck stamps, so they remain in nice condition.

I see. I figured if I am going to post it on my license than there is no need to sign it b/c my license is signed. But I see what your saying
