well, to wrap this up, after talking to the seller and looking more closely at the stamp, I decided to cancel the transaction. The stamp had damage that wasn't listed on the cert. The seller wasn't willing to back up his description. (Which isn't unusual for ckstamps or nystamps)
So the seller and I agreed to cancel the sale.
I rate ckstamps and nystamps along the lines of another stamp company, with this guys it's always a crap shoot.

"So the seller and I agreed to cancel the sale."

And so the seller will go looking for a buyer who dosen't post on SCF. And find one too!

"nothing I can do about that."

I wasn't implying that there was. Just expressing some of my frustration with ebay and the sorry state of stamp collecting. Where Bill Weiss can say that 80% of the stamps he sees have undisclosed faults and the like!

@joe1225us

When it comes to ebay the buyer must beware.

ebay is a massive global market that isn't necessarily centered around the utmost standards and so when it comes to purchasing stamps its hard to fault the general market on a few imprudent sellers.

Regarding CK or NY - I've always shied away from their auctions as its apparent that their lot descriptions lack the type of detail that you would expect from a dealer handling such a large amount of volume.

While they are certainly not the only ones at fault - though I would hesitate to say that 80% of the stamps have undisclosed faults (as that has not been my experience) - again, you really must be careful to scrutinize the lots that you are bidding on especially if they are going for a good amount of money.

Panda

See this qoute "I would guess that 80% of the 19th C. "unused" stamps I see are either cleaned (with cancels lightened or removed) or are regummed or both. " From http://reviews.ebay.com/WHY-HAVE-YO...00001888322, a guide from Bill Wiess.

builderr, try the link in 'V's first post...if the link is working for you, it should take you to the auction with the stamp pictured, front and back, and a copy of an old cert with a b&w reproduction of a "before" picture of the stamp.
