I know this is a personal question, but I figured I would ask anyway...

When looking at what to collect, I was always wondering when to collect the sheet, and when to collect just the stamp.

So I came to the following conclusion, based on how beyondtheperf describes stamps and my personal preference: if a sheet contains selevage art, that's not reason enough to collect the sheet. However, of the selvage contains descriptive text, then the whole mini-sheet.

Looking at albums, my opinion seemed to be shared by album makers. I noticed that even though the Legends of Hollywood series was a mini-sheet of the same stamp, the selvage with description was worth saving.

Well... today I got the 2011 Mystic Heirloom supplement. They, of course, provide a space for the Legends of Hollywood mini-sheet, but for the Merchant Marine sheet with selvage text, it is supposed to be collected as a se-tenant. The civil war souvenir sheet, they want you to collect the 2 individual stamps on the front only. They don't provide a page to mount the sheet. I fail to understand the logic in what they chose to put on their supplement sheets.

I think, after seeing some pages printed out by members on Stamp Community, I would just collect as I saw fit and make a nice page, with write-up to go along with it.

That way you are open to album maker's suggestions of how to collect and what to collect, but are also allowed to do things your own way, as you can create up a separate page just for the stuff you like too.

Rod222's pages come to mind, always nice to have info to mull over as you gaze on the stamps.

I haven't done any myself, more the talker than the doer I am!

Can you provide me a link to Rod222s pages? When I did a search on his name, I got 147 pages of posts. A bit much to weed through.

Unfortunately, that's the thing. They are spread all over.

He researches one stamp or series and then gets some info about it from elsewhere and here and puts it all together in a nice presentation. Fascinating to watch the process. I imagine it takes some trial and error just as everything does though.

The right font, checking that the info is half right, etc.

But I don't think it all has to be super great though. Something is better than nothing at times but sometimes the stamps themselves will shine out over any title or description.

I think it is more that you can do as you please, even to the extent of modifying the page layout and presentation of an album to add or delete things so they tell the story you wish to convey. It is your collection after all.

apastuszak, I'm in the same pickle as you are. My first experience with this problem with the Mystic album was with the 2007 Jamestown sheet (US Scott #4136). It's a beautiful sheet and I couldn't imagine why they wouldn't have included the whole thing, especially since I believe it is more attractive than most of the Legends of Hollywood. Unfortunately, as I discovered with the Forever Liberty Bell series, the publisher can't or won't put in every item we, as collectors deem significant to us. As did you, I also thought that the Civil War sheet warranted a sheet entry ... and still do. My answer is to purchase blank pages and modify the album to meet my desires.

I have been making my own sheets also. I have modified two sheets so far in the album. The problem with doing this for the Mystic album is the descriptions on the back. You have to make sure you marry up the proper descriptions to the sheets.

The civil war sheet is double sided and would require a clear sheet to view both sides. I'll see what I can hack together.

At this point, I almost feel like I should stop buying their supplements and simple make my own, which is more work than I am willing to do. I am waiting for the 2011 Steiner supplement to come out and see how he lays the year out.

It is harder than I thought it would be to find what I was thinking of, sorry about that.

Here is a nice little thread with many scans of different member's (and other's) pages though. Bee See has a nice page shown on page 1.

edit: forgot to add link . . .

I think it would be good to see what got assigned a Scott catalog number. That might help weed things down a bit. Since I just subscribed to Linns the last week in December, I don't have access to back issues of Linns to see Scott catalog numbers.

While this doesn't help explain Mystic's 2011 Stamp Album Supplement, I thought this might be of interest as it relates to the much more expensive White Ace 2011 Stamp Album Supplement. At least they explain what they intend to include in their various 2011 stamp album supplements and their rationale for it:

I've compiled this list from various sources and "dumped" it onto my computer. I can't confirm its accuracy until the next Scott Catalog comes out, but I find it useful as an interim identifier until more firm information is provided:

That list is interesting. Scott doesn't show any listing for the whole sheet for Merchant Marines or Civil War. That would explain perhaps why the whole sheet is not given a place in the 2011 Mystic supplement. However, the Gregory Peck sheet is given a place, even though Scott doesn't mention it as a collectible. Go figure...

Boils down as always to most sensible use of dollars. Someone has to say yes or no and sometimes it can be quite arbitrary. No rhyme nor reason.

I think it's interesting that the USPS is calling the Lunar New Year stamp a Souvenir sheet, but I haven't found any album that wants you to collect the whole sheet.
