I was moving the U.N. stamps from my old albums to my new albums and came upon this set. Apparently, I made a connection that the "UN" perfin might indicate the stamps were used by the United Nations office, prior to issuing their own stamps. On reflection 20+ years later, it does not seem likely, since the Roosevelt was issued well before the United Nations existed. So the question is, if not that, then what does the UN signify? Any thoughts?

Someone with a perfin catalog will be able to tell you for sure. In the meantime, one guess would be UN = University of Nebraska, as colleges and universities were well known to have used perfins.

The United Nations does not have a perfin pattern. What you are seeing, as WT1 suggested is U43, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebraska, used between 1922 and 1963. It is a very common pattern with a "E" rating.

Postat4evr could you lead me to a good book on perfins as I am wanting to learn more on these and I have also decided I wanted to make a separate collection of my US ones.

There are a great number of books on Perfins. Most countries are represented in their own books, usually written by some specialty stamp group in the particular country. Here in the US, we have a Very good group ... The Perfins Club ..
link .... http://www.perfins.org ..... You will be able to get info on the club, and a brief overview of perfin articles there.

The US book on Perfins is a massive undertaking: Catalog of United States Perfins, 1998. The price is pretty high but for a 2 1/4 inch thick book, but it doesn't get much better. The prices I think are on the website.

As mentioned elsewhere on this group, I am a member of the Perfins Club, have been for almost 40 years, and find the club very useful when it comes to US Perfins (as well as foreign material). I think the dues ar $15 per year, but that gets you 6 issues of the clubs publication, access to sales circuits, access to discounted books, and so on.

I do not know of any single publication that deals with worlwide perfins, so
can't help you there. If I can be of any other help, email me off group and I will see what I can do to help.
