Most of you know that I am a "cover lover" collecting "out of the ordinary" covers. Last night I returned home from the Ameristamp show held in Atlanta, GA. I did not find much I was interested in, but did buy 2 nice padded H&G 3-ring binders for $20 which did have some nice covers, but nothing excitingly different. I did find a nice one in the binder shown here. It has a copy of the Juan De Fuca Los Angeles Olympics stamp tied to the cover, and the stamped wording that it was carried on the Black Ball ferry "COHO" from Victoria, Canada to Port Angeles in state of Washington.

Lovely! The straight of Juan de Fuca is the waterway to the South of Victoria Island, British Columbia and Washington state. Port Angeles, Wa is a short ferry ride across the straight.

Funny, I ran Google search of Port Angeles Despatch service and the top search item was from SCF. Good info here ...

There were 3 or 4 acknowledged cachet masters at the Ameristamp show - of course with hundreds of their work for sale. I had interesting talks with them about their designs, inspiration, etc. and indicated that I was mainly interested in unusual covers or those with an error. One cachet designer provided me these two covers - the first by noted cachet designer Thomas Peluso. Can you spot why it is "different"? Would a spell checker have kept this from being a collectable by me?

Cachet makers frequently purchase many blank postmarked covers and apply the cachet afterwards. Cuv Evanson of Cuv Evanson Cachets apparently grabbed the wrong covers for the Iowa Caucus cachet, so the wording in the vignette was modified and a side note printed by the cachet. I am now the owner of one of only twenty!

My wife grew up close to Anacortes, WA, so we have taken the ferry to Victoria (as well as to Vancouver). We would take the ferry from Anacortes. I have not been on the Port Angeles ferry.

Interesting

I used to receive auction catalogues from K.M. Robertson some time ago. I always got nice stamps on the covers too. Whenever Canada Post was out on strike, I would receive them from Port Angeles as well.

Here is a cover I received in 1970. The back also had a Railway Post Office (R.P.O.) on the back too. I also scanned the back of the cover to show the different postmarks. They don't treat them like this any more :(

Some of my scans have a 'mottled' look.

Can anyone tell me what setting I have that is either too high or too low?

Thanks a lot

That is an interesting cover, Bujutsu. I like that it has an rpo cancel on it.

1/31/2012 - Another cover from the batch I purchased at the Ameristamp show. It is from COMMITTEE ON LUNACY of the Board of Public Charities, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and is franked with a pair of #252 2 cent type III pale carmine stamps.
Text reads: Rec'd Dec 4, 1897 Type Written letter on Act of Assembly no. 64, Pamphlet Laws 1897, page 83. Known "County Care Act." for the maintenance care and treatment of the indigent insane in c ounty and local institutions. Show this to Co. Commis's and their solicitor.

That's a great cover Bujutsu. Pays not to throw anything away.
As for you scans I'd suggest you could probably scan at a higher resolution. You can always reduce the size of the file to accommodate the web page, but if you scan low and then enlarge the image you'll get that distortion.
I scan at 600ppi then reduce to 72, adjusting the dimensions accordingly.

Excellent cover too, ncbuckeye. That last one is just crazy!

I'm curious. As a self described 'cover lover', how do you store them? I'm getting a bit of a pile here myself and want to sort and put them into some sort of album. I'm thinking acid free card stock and clear photo corners. Any ideas?

Bujutsu,

I use IrfanView to prepare my images for uploading to the forum and will always get that mottled appearance whenever I try to save a 600dpi scan to a file size under 100kb without having first resized it to 1024 x 768 pixels or less.

jamesw - I store covers in several ways - for my older covers which usually are more fragile, I have two G&K oversized binders with two pocket (top/bottom) clear pocket pages. For smaller covers, I print my own page, mount with clear corner pocket tabs and insert into archival pocket. Here is what the page for the above rabbit cover looks like.

If I want to show the reverse, I make an image of the reverse and usually place on reverse of the page:

I can whip out one of these pages in a minute. I print on 110 lb archival card stock simply because I have 6 or 7 reams of it and my laser printer has no problem with it.
-- I cropped off the top of the front page! The top of the front page is identical to the top of the second page.
