Anyone have any information about this book and its value?

Do you know what the cardboard inserts are?

Thanks,
Jim

I have no idea as to the book's value, however, it looks to be a compilation of booklets by the author Fred J. Melville. Here's his picture:

A brief biography follows:

Quote:
MELVILLE, Frederick John d.1940 age 57. Educated Westminster. Famous as philatelic author and journalist. Founded Junior Philatelic Society in 1899, was President from its inception until his death, and edited the Stamp Lover. Served on the juries of many philatelic exhibitions at home and abroad. Awarded Congress Cup at PCGB Bath 1935, for his paper 'The Lives of the Forgers'. RDP 1921. Among his prolific writings were 'The ABC of Stamp Collecting', 'Chats on Postage Stamps', the series of twenty-eight 'Melville Stamp Books', 1908-36, each devoted to an individual country, and his final work 'Modern Stamp Collecting' [1940]. A bibliography, by LN & M Williams, of the Melville oeuvre, appeared in the Stamp Lover, January - May 1941, and was afterwards reprinted as a booklet. Outside philately, he had been editor of the Heartsease Library, Cosy Corner, Good Words, and the Sunday Magazine.

Although I don't know about this myself, I looked on Wikipedia and there is a history of Fred Melville who wrote over 100 books on philately.

There are similar titles to this one and a title that is the first part of the book but no exact listing for this book's title by Stanley Gibbons (which it is as the insert says so). There is not a complete listing of his books on Wikipedia either.

As to value, I couldn't hazard a guess, sorry. I suppose searching for his name on ebay mght turn up something.

The cardboard inserts, if they are those you show in the pictures, seem to be made after the book was sold to Stanley Gibbons by Melville books, so are probably needed when a book printed by one publisher is bought and then the remainder of the stock is sold under the new name.

Thanks, all...do you know if the two pages I posted are actual 'stamps?'

It seems a possibility theyre inserted 'covers' of some sort.

Your book is really 3 soft cover books (1847-1869, 1870-1893, 1894-1910)that were privately hard bound after publication. Melville authored several short books on U.S. stamps covering at least up to 1925 (I have seen 1911-1922 and 1923-1925). The used book value is about $30-40.

Thank you, Russ....mystery answered; appreciated.

Reading this thread imbues me with the sense of collegiality and reverence there is amongst philatelists and their predecessors.

Very nice.
