I believe this 117 will qualify as having pretty good centering.

"...having pretty good centering"

There's the understatement of the day! Beautiful stamp with excellent centering. <Jealous>

Thanks klange. I have an average centered copy as well and bought this one for the manuscript cancel. The beautiful green and the ship make it my favorite design of the 1869 pictorials. The centering was a nice bonus that came with the cancel.

Love the manuscript cancel, not easy to find. That certainly is a very nice piece.

I catch myself going through the collection, when I'm not focused on the ID'ing part, and enjoy looking for those well centered stamps that jump off the page at me. These three are the best I've found, so far.

What an attractive trio ! The balanced margins really give it a great visual appeal.

I love that 12 cent too. This was my avatar here before I finally scored a #1

@cet_gg

That last one cent is truly a wonderful stamp. If it were a jumbo it would be a big ticket item, for those who pursue such things. Glad to be able to see it here.

Thank you, essayk, for your kind words. I am trying to identify the cancel on it, right now.

I debated, but what the heck, we're all friends here, right?

Anyway, between other projects I have been assembling a group of "pretty" 1861 issue stamps. I don't really study these much, but they are nice to have for reference. Anyway, here are the better centered examples from the items I have.

The second 24c is a certified 70b - steel blue (whether it's color comes through that way or not).

After a lot of fiddling with canvas size I gave up and readjusted a couple on the bottom row to get them all to fit the canvas I was using.

These stamps are not perfect by a long shot, but all are sound and I like them. Do you?

Beautiful stamps, essayk - I especially like the twelve cent (along with the great steel blue 24 cent)! Is the five cent one of the shade varieties?
