I like this stamp but man he looks mean. I noticed this one has a lower catalog value. I wonder if its because he is scowling. Cheer up General you won.

True. But if you checkout all of the images on the web for General Sherman, all have a (perhaps intended) stern, mean look on his face.

This one is a little better (but not by much):

I think that might have been the intended way to pose for photographs back in the day.

I was recently looking at pictures of all the US Presidents and it is rare to see a smile on their faces either. In fact, it seems you had to wait until you went through to 20th century Presidents from Harry S Truman forward before it was considered "presidential" for US Presidents to pose with a smile!

Little did he know that he would be the subject of five (5) US Postage Stamps, more than many US Presidents.

If you Google "Sherman's March to the Sea" you'll see that he certainly wouldn't qualify for the "Mr. Nice Guy" award.

He was not the sort of man to whom smiles would come easily.

Alright I have decided the real collectible here would be the picture of Gen. Sherman with the big grin on his face. I don't think any exist.

In those days people often had bad teeth that they would not want to reveal in portrait.

Also I think they thought it looked more dignified.

Not to mention the length of time they had to stand still, even for a photograph.

His wife, Ellen Ewing Sherman, did not believe in tobacco or alcohol, he had eight children and was commanded by Grant. Would you smile?

Sherman was a miserable S.O. B. He burned Atlanta & committed other acts. Dont believe he was the type to smile...

Sherman suffered from depression and probably had a nervous breakdown before the war. As far as his "acts", that war (and all wars) are full of unspeakable acts committed by every side. That is part of what makes war a thing to be avoided.
