noticed the Scott's catalog lists an Unsed and Used price for duck stamps. What constitutes a "used" duck stamp? Is used one that is affixed to the hunting license, signed, or something else?
Also, I have a few old ones (including RW1) that are affixed to the license, Would it hurt the value to soak them off the paper?
Thanks everyone

I'm interested in this response as well, as I have several old licenses with duck, and some fishing, stamps affixed. |

Signed by the purchaser. Things like this are always best left on the document. |

I would leave it on the document as well. I have a lot of used ducks and noticed that many were damaged removing them from paper. Also many collectors want the original document especially if it is in a very good condition. |

Do NOT remove them from the licenses. It's also a good idea to check the dates of any cancels(especially on the early issues) for first day uses. Ducks, like a number of revenues were valid from July 1st to June 30 of the following year, which was the fiscal year. |

Thanks all, but I'm still not sure what constitutes a "used" duck stamp. Since they aren't used for postage, they're not cancelled as standard postage stamps are. Does a signature mean the stamp is used? If not, what does. |

Yes, a signature means USED, unequivocally. If an unsigned duck stamp "falls off" a license, it is unused without gum, and Scott Specialized prices them that way too.
Example (2008): RW-1 mint never-hinged...$800 RW-1 no gum...$160 RW-1 signed...$140
Subsequent issues of the 1930s have a higher value ratio, "no gum" as much as 1/3 more than "signed". |

doug2222 - my RW1 is afixed to the license (in this case a card, about 1.5 times larger than a credit card.) The stamp itself is not signed. Where does that arrangement fit into your classification? Thanks |

If it is on a license it is clearly used whether it was cancelled or not. According to Scott, when RW1 was issued it was technically against the postal regulations to deface the stamp or apply a signature, so it is not always there. All others were supposed to be signed. That is why the cat value is the same for used and unused with no gum for that stamp. |
