Sometime back I posted a question. Basicly I was wondering is when the post office department made the Scott 905b 3 cent "Win The War" if they had an overrun that made it into the general supply of the regular 905. The Scott 905b was a special order to fill the precancel needs for orders received from Los Angeles Ca. and Fremont Ohio. My thought is the printing department would have made an overage to make sure if there was a problem there would be enough to fill the requests. The balance would have been added to the regular stock. I found a block of 4 without plate numbers that didn't match the normal shades for this stamp. I have several thousand used ones in bundles of 100. I opened 5 bundles and spread them out on a table and place the block of 4 within them. It stood out to me and several others. At the time I was having some items with PSAG for expertising. I spoke with Randy there about it. He had a block of 4 of the Los Angeles to compare and said he would give it a look. When he compared them together he said the colors were almost identical. He wanted several others to look at it. After a couple of weeks he said they all agreed they hadn't seen a shade that came so close to the reddish violet but they could not list it as such. Without a plate number or other reference to lead them to a definitive decision they decided to call it dark violet. Scott doesn't have a dark violet listed. That shade listing is a plus and a minus. It wasn't listed as the rare 905b (I didn't really think it would be) but I'm happy with the dark violet. I didn't take a picture of the stamps but can if anyone if interested. What do you think?
