The centering on this stamp is about as good as you will ever find. Anybody familiar with the 1857's will recognize the rarity of this stamp.

Here is another nicely centered stamp from a very desirable Plate 2 position, 89R2. Check out that DT! |

Neinken stated that the 89R2 was the "Most outstanding DT known on U.S. general issues" |

The shading left of the "C" is normal. It's like that on all of them-- and it always looks strange to me.
On the perf'd stamp, Winston, I know that the "A" reliefs are about the most difficult to tell, but the right side and particularly the "R" ornament is as full as any I've seen on an "A" relief, so I'm guessing, without trying to plate it first that it's a Plate 5, Type Va.
Either way, they're both absolutely beautiful.......Ray |

Double transfer is also in the line below the white below the letter "N" and in the ornaments on the lower left. Winston just wishes that this stamp would be found on the plate, one stamp directly below this one! And for those who aren't familiar with the 1c 1851, that would be 99R2, which is a pretty good one, the most famous and best found example of the Type III stamp-- and very, very expensive...... |

Winston, am I reading the Neinken illustration correctly in that the 2nd DT is high and right of the "T" in Cents on the oval ?

Winston,
Beauties, both!
The DT is without equal, unless it another of same position. ;) The Va is in the same class.

The #24 is an A relief stamp and they can be a little deceiving when trying to differentiate the types. This stamp is a Type V from Plate 7 or 8. The Type Va, A relief is more complete at ornament R. I posted it because of the extraordinarily balanced margins.
The original transfer of 89R2 is the complete design. The second, unintended transfer created the doubling. The doubling of the lower parts of the design was created by the normal over-rocking of the transfer roll when entering position 99R2, which was placed too high due to a misplaced guide dot. Position 99R2 was partially erased an re-entered which is the cause of the doubling in that position.
There is no need to flyspeck 89R2. There is a pronounced doubling of all of the ornaments at the bottom of the design. The doubling is lower and to the right and is also limited to the lower parts of the position due to the nature of the cause. |

Is that a Hair or something on the scanner top of stamp just off center right, down across the top of the letter "A" and down through the middle of the "G & E" of Postage ? Does the big plate 2 flaw show in that position ? |

Stallzer, It's just a hair... need a can of compressed air. The big flaw as at the top of the left pane. |

Nice examples. I have always had trouble identifying double transfers. I only hope during the past 50 odd years I didn't give any away |
