Hey there. Anyone have a good eye for determining the type of Franklin pictured? I just found it stuck in the binder of my Dads old book. Unfortunately, there is a tear on the upper right corner (any way to mend that?). Also, if you know of a reference for decoding the Franklin series drop me a link. Thanks for the help.

P.S. anyone think it looks like the perfs may have been cut off? It looks a little lean on the margins to me.

There appear to be perfs on the bottom?

it's normal for a perforated 1857 issue-stamp, of which this is a badly mutilated copy.
As for ID, in this condition, who cares?
C.

From the looks, which leaves a lot to be desired, it may be a scott Nbr 20. However, the trimmed perfs, torn corner, bottom pulled perf etc. doesn't leave much on the bone. It has the city dispatch cancellation, which is on the plus side. Which still doesn't leave much.

Not even sure the perfs are original.

The perfs, I think, are good, because it's a Plate 12 stamp, because the dot is in the oval margin on the left side.

Not complete at the bottom, so it's going to be a type II (as Art said, #20), but in the shape that it's in, afraid it isn't going to be worth much more than 1/30th or 1/50th of Scott Cat, which is $300. Probably worth $5- $10 at the most and that's a stretch.

But, any of the 1c 1857's other than type V, #24, are tough stamps, so it is a tough one, albeit a really bad copy.

Hope this helps-- Ray

The original photo is from a scanner...this one I'm including is from a camera. Looks like the scanner needs a replacement. It still is a pretty rough copy with the camera - thanks for the help

I am stunned at how easily you were able to identify this. I tried identifying this from Scott, but gave up because not enough of the margins show. It's clear you need the book on 1851s in order to truly know this stamp.

Yes appears to be number 20, but because those are pretty scarce someone may give you $20 and it would be equitable. Certainly is a "space filler" in every sense of the word.

Amazing how many variations of the 1c Franklin were produced. The damage to my stamp makes it hard to sell so I'm going to hold onto it because I just think it's cool. Thanks for the help.
