May we see the whole thing please? It looks good so far though and I like the cork on it too. I enjoy these covers from this time period (1961-ish) immensely. |

Hi jony78,
Very nice, out of the ordinary item. I particularly like the pencil note on the back, which maybe hints at a family disagreement. One to keep.

This link sounds like it would be the recorded histories of the addressees noted on the cover (George G. Kimball, Esq.) and his father (Israel Kimball of the Internal Revenue Office in Washington, DC): http://minnesotastamps.com/?p=87 |

The "carrier" cancel adds some value too. Are there any contents that give a clue as to the year? |

amazing info as always WT1, i dont believe theres a letter, its currently winging its way across the pond as we speak so will have to wait, seller listed it as a genuine sc64 pink on cover, obviously not,but no mention of perfs etc, even states a refund if not as described, although im happy with it just being an unusual sc65 cover |

Nashville Tennessee was occupied by Federal Troops on 02/23/1862. So the cover would be dated sometime after that. The color on the stamp appears too faded for me to try and determine a year date on the stamp by color. Maybe ray.mac will take a look at it and see if he can determine a date by color. Really nice cover in any event. |

Al, I was trying to think of the Nashville situation. Is the end result that Nashville covers with Confederate stamps and cancels (late 1861 to early 1862) are worth much more than other contemporary larger cities of the Confederacy? |

Doug, I'm not really versed on Confederates. It seems logical to me the earlier a major city was occupied, that there would be a smaller number of covers with confederate stamps surviving? According to some information on Siegel's site, postmaster provisionals (Nashville did have provisionals) started appearing in June of 1861. It seems, again from the same source, that the first actual Confederate stamps were available starting in October 1861. It would seem that there isn't very much of a time frame between the issue and the occupation for there to be much opportunity for Confederate stamp usage from Nashville? That being the case, I'd think Nashville post marked covers with Confederate stamp(s) would be harder to find and have a pretty good value? I don't know that for a fact, that's just speculation on part. Perhaps someone who specializes in or has more knowledgeable with this could chime in and have a better answer to the question. |

I remember the cover and I put a minimal bid on it, I think! I'm almost wondering if it might not be an occupation cover at all. The CDC looks right but the color of the stamp looks late to me like the 65s and 66s that are the more faded colors. The 63s and 64s are bolder with bold roses and reds and clarets and you have the pinkish roses of 63. If the stamp was early, a la 61 or early 62 I'd guess salmon rose cause it looked yellowy to me but again could be any of the pale brownish roses from the 65-6) time period.
Hope this was helpful, but I doubt it was...Ray |
