Earliest documented use of the #231 is Jan 1, 1893. Since this is a plate flaw, there is no indication of the EKU for the "broken hat" variety. However, it would be interesting to see if anyone has an earliest cancellation on one.
I was hoping they would have a eku on the broken hat. It seems pretty early to have a plate flaw but it was a popular stamp and they made billions of them.
I have three broken hats on cover. The earliest of mine is 09/25/1893. Maybe others on the site have broken hat cover and can also check their dates and let you know.
Since the broken hat was a progressive break in a transfer roll, there are numerous variations (Brookman, 19th Century Postage Stamps of the US p.152). An EKU might well vary depending on the size of the break at the time.
revcollector that's a really fascinating piece of information! Thank you. I'll have to look into getting a variation or two after I research it out a bunch more! I never knew that there even was variants of it?
My earliest is January 13, 1893 Ortonville, Minnesota on full cover with an insurer's corner card. The stamp has a strong clear break in the hat which is interesting because the break is progressive. Scott would not generally list an EKU or EDU for a variety.
