I recently came across a USN memorial stamp (http://usstampgallery.com/view.php?...e25c14bb8df) embedded in a USN Memorial "Victory Club" frame, and I had a couple of questions about it.

The text reads: "This gift is awarded in deep appreciation of the vital role you play in helping us commemorate - and preserve - the unique and remarkable heritage of America's sea services, through your support of our "living" tribute, the U.S. Navy Memorial. In deep appreciate of your special commitment to the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation, please accept our eternal thanks."

It is "signed" by James E. Miller, Rear Admiral, SC, USN (ret.), who, incidentally, died just last year at Inova Fairfax hospital, here in VA.

Obviously the stamp is not worth much, but my question is, would it be a bad idea to separate it from this "award"? I had thought of pulling the stamp out and sending it to a niece who collects stamps on an amateur level, but since the stamp and award are both in mint condition I thought I'd check first.

Any thoughts?

My first inclination is to say leave them together, but I'm not sure I understand... when you say it's embedded in the frame, do you mean the stamp is a part of the frame, or the stamp is framed?

The stamp is framed. It's in a small 6"x6" inexpensive frame, but is in some sort of a clear plastic sleeve.

If it was me and it was just a run-of-the-mill commemorative, then I would get it out of that frame, albeit VERY carefully, but it being housed in a frame lends it to a cavalcade of problems. Direct sunlight, chemical reactions, glass breakage and lacerated stamps..it just goes on and on..

I can't see the image on that link for whatever reason?

HOWEVER- since this was part of an award and it's a sort of "combo-package" I would just leave it fully intact as separating it would destroy any history or lineage that may be involved making it valued more than the sum-of-it's-parts. You mentioned that it was an inexpensive stamp so, keep an eye out for a duplicate and tuck the "award" away for safe-keeping.

I hope this helps some?

I whole-heartedly agree. Anytime you separate an item as you have described, the value of all items usually diminishes. Why not send the whole item to your niece?
I am interested in seeing the item - would it be possible to post am image?
