Is it possible to have an attached pair of scott 425 and 463? This vertical pair hasn't arrived yet, but I'll be dipping it as soon as it does to see for myself. I'm just wondering if anyone else has heard of this, or if it's even possible. The listing scan was really low resolution. I can post a decent scan when it comes.

The seller's listing stated:

"This unusual condition happened when printed on the extreme end of a watermarked paper sheet. The top stamp was printed on the paper sheet edge portion without a watermark, while the lower stamp was printed on the same paper sheet which had the watermark."

Were the watermarked paper sheets really such as to include a border portion at the top or bottom that was not watermarked, so that this could even occur?

It is possible for a watermarked sheet of paper to bear stamps where a watermark, or part of one, appears on one stamp, but not clearly on the next stamp. At least a tiny part of the watermark should be visible on both stamps but sometimes it can be awfully hard to tell. Especially if a cancellation is involved. This link may clarify what I'm trying to say...

This may more likely be your situation.

Thanks IBFS. I suspect that may be the case. So the pair arrived, and I took a look. I can definitely see a good portion of the single line "U" on the bottom stamp, but can't find anything on the top stamp. It may be there, but I'm not seeing anything. I think I'll send this in for an expert opinion. Even if this is just a case of a difficult to see watermark on the top stamp, I'd like to know if it's even possible to have a pair where one stamp doesn't include the watermark, while the other does.

The quick answer to your question is "yes" it is possible for one of the stamps not to show a watermark, along the lines of what IBFS said. But that does not turn it into the unwatermarked version that came out at a different time. Both of your stamps are #425 by virtue of coming from the same sheet. I'm pretty sure that is what the expertizer will tell you.

Nicely centered pair BTW.
