I picked up this 190 last evening for just a couple dollars. I know the centering isn't perfect but I'm happy with it.

This is the sellers image.

I'm confused. Is that a scanning error? According to the Scott Catalog a #190 is supposed to be black in color. Your example looks distinctively blue. Why?

It's probably a photo taken in improper lighting wt1. This is the sellers image I though I mentioned that? Oh well, sorry.

I picked this up as well. this is also the sellers image.

Thanks for the clarification. I did read that the image was provided by the seller, but it seems to me it should have been accurate enough that the stamp would at least have been pictured in its correct color.

Anyway, I like the 1876 International Exhibition Ticket. As I always like to put a name with a face on these old items, here's a group picture of those key staff members of the 1876 International Exhibition. The man seated in the center is David G. Yates, Chief, Bureau of Admissions and signer of your Ticket.

Following the 1876 Exhibition, Mr. Yates later bought out a company and went into the gardening/landscaping business under the name of David G. Yates & Co., of Mount Airy Nurseries in Philadelphia (Germantown).

I don't know much about US stamps but I wonder if this is what my old Scott calls greenish black (Scott#190a).

Nah, just a hazy photo. I'll scan it proper when it shows up and we'll see what it actually looks like. I noticed the poor picture quality right off but it wasn't off putting enough to deter a sale as I could still see the condition was OK and the so-so centering and the price was really very good (very low) so I popped on it.

Here is the scan I promised. I just received it this morning! Yaay! So is it a #190 for sure?

Thank you. As far as I can tell it's a "Full Black", #190 with secret mark (the spike or strike-through modification in the "s" of cents).

@wt1- Thanks for posting that pic of the centennial commissioners. I like having that stuff with the material too. Do you know if it is available somewhere in a higher res/larger size?

@ILS- that 190 looks about as 190 as they get.

Yeah, I know. It's old, I'm new,

but I'm digging back in the archives to learn about how things are done, by whom, how often, to what result, etc. I only respond to things that have an open end to them or could be useful again, IMO.

You folks have had some good discussions. No harm in keeping that sort of thing in front of interested newcomers like me

Seriously though, I hope peeps are not offended by revisiting these things. Sometimes new light comes to old topics.
