The left example has numerous varieties. The best I can come up with is that it's a Die 9 so it would make it a U429h (if on white paper) or a U430h (if on amber paper). Paper colors, mixed with aging of the envelopes and differences in scanner settings and monitor viewings can often make it difficult to accurately identify the exact variety. In either case, whether a U429h or U430h, the value is same at catalog minimum of $0.20 used (based on my 2011 Scott catalog).
The cut square on the right is probably a U113 (if on white paper) with a 2011 catalog value of $1. Of course, in this case, too, there are color varieties of the paper that would change the catalog number and value. |

The left one is U429h, Scott cat value $.20 for used cut square. The one on the right looks like a U74, mint cut square, with Scott cat of $45. If the scan is not cropped, then I would say the margins are too small to be of interest to a buyer willing to agree on that catalog value.
The paper with the one on the right I may have wrong. Depends on what your scanner is doing to it. There is no buff/cream for that die, so its either white or amber. I always go with white as it comes in a wide range of shades. Cat value not much different with amber, anyway. Manila is another possibility. How do the laid lines lie? Horizontal would be manila.

Simultaneous response going on here :-)
wt1, you sure this guy is die type U35? Franklin doesn't seem to be leaning forward and the top and bottom outlines of the front of the bust taper down to the left, whereas Die U35 is somewhat parallel. |

Quote: wt1, you sure this guy is die type U35? Not sure at all. You may very well be right in your designating it a U74. I can only go by my Scott catalog and the illustration for the U74 suggests a much stronger blue color. Is there a color variety (ultramarine?) that could be closer to the example shown rather than just "blue" or are there a variety of color hues known for the issue? |

I understand that monitors differ in color and contrast but perhaps you can use this chart to ID your paper color? Thomas Galloway, wrote in the provided link, this: Quote:From left to right: white, amber, oriental buff, blue, manila, amber manila Top row: buff, fawn, orange (2) Bottom row: white, white (war paper), manila, brown
The link to the thread- https://goscf.com/t/27102&SearchTerms=manillaWT1 also posted this, which I believe is just a slightly more detailed image of the above? Either way it may prove useful. |
