I will be presenting my first philatelic display to my club, tomorrow night, on the topic of 1869 pictorials.

I'm not the most creative person so have kept it simple, letting the stamps speak for themselves. I am currently working on a brief paragraph to introduce the collection.

The only thing missing in this display are the 300+ Scott #114 singles from my collection as it will put me over the 10 display panes allowed, so I opted only to display multiples.

Enjoy!

Brian

Very nice collection. I don't think I ever recall seeing so many copies of those stamps in one place before! It should make for a nice presentation.

So that's where all the 1869 issue went. Just kidding. Very nice display, Brian.

Brian,

A great presentation, and that's an awesome 122. Perhaps it deserves a page of its own?

Thank you for the kind words! In truth, it's amazing what a bad photograph will hide. This stamp has a major thin and has been rebacked. Other than that, it has great eye-appeal.

But your #122 appears to be superbly centered with a very reasonable cancellation. Don't know what it is about that issue, but so many of the #122s I've seen have really poor centering. Perhaps worse than any other US stamp. Again beautiful appearance on your stamp.

Most definitely! If I failed to mention the beauty of your pictorial collection in my shock at seeing those, then I must now. Absolutely AMAZING Rileysan!

Personally I like the layout on the Vario pages the way you kind of staggered the pieces. Great looking display and some great looking Stamps !

One thing I always liked about the early stamps is the engraving, they did the best work back then. I wonder, if you were to scan a stamp at, say 2400, and print it in color. You could then perhaps show the artwork behind the stamp. Kinda like a photograph before each sheet. Just an idea.

Lovely collection Brian. And I have to agree with a couple of others here, this must be why I have such a hard time finding some of these....you have them all.
But I was wondering. I like how you've set them up and staggered them in the vario sheets, but does you club allow presentations in varios? (silly question I guess because obviously you're doing it). It's just that my club only allows presentations on proper pages with type etc. They've got pretty strict standards as I've found recently. I haven't exhibited yet, but was speaking with a couple of folks at our recent bourse and was given quite a lecture on the do's and don'ts. Perhaps someday I'll dip my toe.
Hope it goes well for you.

Great 1869 collection, Brian.
Many mentions here about the 122....it's a GREAT copy of #115 w/ XF to Sup centering...really tough centering on that stamp. I'm referring to the first one in the top row.

If you're a member of USPCS, you've already seen this quarter's copy of "The Chronicle", and if you haven't you must get a copy, highlighting Nick Kardasis' 1869 collection. I don't know Nick, but I think he posts on Virtual Stamp Club, and the collection is something to behold. You can get a copy from the USPCS website, at uspcs.org.

Thanks, Ray

Thank you all for the compliments! If I had a scanner, I would have better images for you to view. I will have my camera with me tonight, so will take a couple photographs to add to the thread.

I am also working on a new album to display my covers, of which I have more than 50 #114's, a few 113's, and a fake 116.

I didn't ask!

But honestly, this is an informal display intended for education and enjoyment for the evening. I am only allotted 5 mins to talk about my display. The rest of the time it will remain on the display board. I know there are a few OSS members who create competitive displays, but I'm certain they will approve :)

A recent acquisition that has yet to make it into my album. The first page with the entire set is what came out of my album (first time they have been removed in years).

One more thing, Ray. Take a look at the 113 on the first image. The top and bottom margins are simply unreal! That, and the 116 & 121 on the same page are the three stamps I cherish most!

I am not, but will look them up!

That, and the subject matter makes this set my favorite, hands down!

I really need to buy a scanner. I've run out of excuses!

I'll answer that two ways:

1) I got my first copy of 114 (3c train stamp) at 11 years old. I will be 42 shortly. It was my favorite stamp throughout my childhood, and I always dreamed of owning the whole set. I couldn't be more pleased that I do :)

2) The series was sold for barely 13 months (or 11 months depending on who's opinion you ask). It's difficult for me to understand why this set was so unpopular at that time. If it had lasted as long as the previous series, it would have been around for nearly 18 years. Then again, we might not have the Banknote series to enjoy if that had happened.

Meeting over. Presentation was a hit! In true, Pacific NW fashion, here's me in shorts, flannel, and baseball cap giving my presentation.

Cheers!

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall for that presentation Rileysan! How many turned out? Was they as amazed as we are at that mammoth pictorial presentation? Sorry for all the questions but I'm an inquiring mind and have to know...lol
-Jay

Oh yeah-
I must say that you don't look at all like I pictured you! Look like a dude I could sit down and have a brewski with!
