You really have to love those old revenues.

The same is true for the old Canadian ones as well because of the fancy engine turns on some of the designs.

Great stamps NeoRev

I don't see how anyone in their right mind would ever collect a bunch of old revenue stamps...

(Welcome to the addiction! Now just wait until you start branching out into documents, plate varieties, or *gasp* cancels...)

Again, these are typical perforations for second or third issue stamps. Not the sharp clean perfs of most postage issues, or even of the later revenue issues.
Find time to hold them up to a strong light and look at them from the back, and notice how lumpy they are. Use a 10x or 15x to examine them, it's like looking at another world. Sometimes they have tiny pores that almost look like thin spots or holes but are natural to the paper.

revenuecollector, Yeah what am I thinking As for branching out, I'm already there! I'm going to collect revenue material relating to Philadelphia PA. Insurance and railroad cancels, documents, RN printed material, even CDV's.
Also the private die proprietary stamps.
I figure I'll be able to build a well rounded interesting collection, and learn alot about my city's history, all without those pesky blank spaces and I'll be able to do it according to my budget.
I'm thinking there'll be an near endless amount of material available, just have to hunt for it.

revcollector. I'll take your advice and study the paper. Always good to know what to expect as far as condition goes for the different issues.

Philadelphia had a very active custom house; there are several different types of cancels (at least 5) on first to third issues both on and off documents. Philadelphia is also where the first issues were produced.

Thanks for the info once again revcollector, I did know about the first 3 issues being printed by the Butler Carpenter firm. Alot of private die stamps were also printed by that firm as well correct?
One site that looks to be a big help in finding cancels related to philadelphia is [url]"http://1898revenues.blogspot.com/"[url]

Those are only the 1898 series, not the earlier revenues. Butler & Carpenter and then Joseph Carpenter (after Butler died) printed all the old paper, all of the experimental silk paper, and a few of the silk paper match & medicines. ABNCO printed the bulk of the silk papers and a few of the watermarked papers. NBN printed the pink papers, and the Bureau printed the bulk of the watermarked papers. The timing for all of this is not exact and there were different papers available concurrently. The old paper first issues and the old paper match & medicines are printed on the same somewhat variable paper. The silk first issues and the experimental silk m&m's are also on the same paper; it tends to be less variable than the old paper which came from at least two different manufacturers over a 9 year period.

Ah yes, that site is only for the 1898 series, still a good resource. Could you recommend a book or other resource for cancels on the first issues?

They're beautiful. I've always wondered why revenue stamps are prettier than regular issues.
