I have recently acquired a collection of stamps and I found this one 10 cent Washington 1861-62 I am trying to figure out what listing this stamp would go under as the book I have is called "The Postal Service Guide to US Stamps" 27th edition and has multiple listings for it and I am so confused as I am new to this collecting stamps about 3 weeks in
If anyone can give some advice as to what kind of listing it would be under that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Seridium

Unless this is a grilled stamp, it is a Scott #68. Look on the back of the stamp. If you can see any rows and columns of what look like indentions in the paper, it is a grilled issue. If so, post a good, clear image of the back of the stamp and we can try to determine which grill issue it is. Go to this site: www.1847usa.com for some good information regarding classic era US stamps. Also, this stamp is pretty well off-center which does adversly effect any value.

As already stated, this is most likely a (Scott catalogue) #68, with average centering, and a tear or cut on the right margin.

There is also the possibility it has a "grill". A grill looks like the face of a meat tenderizer on the back of stamps from this era. It was intended to tear the surface of the paper to allow cancellation ink to soak deep into the paper to prevent reuse.

Although still collectable, the tear makes this stamp a "filler" and is basically worthless no matter which catalogue number it is.

Cheers!

Brian
