Is this a precancel? They don't seem to be gummed, so I'd guess they've been used. Please excuse the way they're displayed, someone before me hinged them to this page... I notice a #1 in parenthesis before and after the city and state names. Thanks for looking!

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but, I think this is a type of roller cancellation that was used as a precancel??

Thanks folks! So, placed on a large package and then cancelled with this very cool roller device...I wonder what the number 1 in parenthesis is about? |

It is correct that it is a roller cancel typically used on parcels. However it was never intended nor was it used as a precancel. The (1) in parenthesis is likely identifying the clerk or desk or machine that cancelled the item. Larger cities have been known to use these numbers even in standard cancellations through the late 20th century. Here's a roller cancel from Los Angeles from the early 1960s that shows Los Angeles, Calif.: |

I hate to see that stamp ...so cancelled. I love that Winged Globe series (US Scott #C12, 16,17,19 & 24). -IBFS |

The three stamps illustrated all have a duplex cancel with an oval "killer". |

Peter, you are right! Doug, I hadn't see that! Thanks. There sure is a lot to look at with stamps. I could keep going through this collection for years and never see everything, I bet.
