It's a Scott #409 with Schermack type III perfs. Value 20 cents.

I don't see any perfs on the right side which must mean it was first in line at the end of a coil. Maybe that adds value. But I wouldn't think that much. Dunno.

The Schermack Mailing Machine was capable of affixing stamps at the speed of 250 stamps per minute. The stamps were fed through the machine with "fingers" that searched for the elongated slots and cut from the coil by a knife at the time of application.

Millions of these were sent through the mails between 1908 and 1927. The machines were common in high volume mailing houses. Most were discarded as they were on the junk mail of the day.

Not uncommon to only see perfs on either side of the stamp. Actually perfs on both sides is a slight premium.

It isn't a 482A. Color is wrong and the toga rope and button are not strong.

There are only forty or so of the 482A Schermacks known, and that one is not a 482A.

408 if watermarked, 481 if not watermarked.

If you haven't been on these sites yet, www.1847USA.com. is a good site for learning about stamp varieties, and, www.siegelauctions.com and www.philatelicfoundation.org. are good references sources.

I suppose one day I should ID it...... Problem is I know it's a common stamp (Albeit the centering and full perfs might add a premium) but all in all since it's not one of my more expensive items I've simply filed it as TBD.
