I just thought this cover was interesting in that it seems to cover a lot of cancellation subjects all in one! (Mind you, I'm not expert and only know this from what I've been reading on the forum.)
It's got 4 different dates... mailed, received, returned and ???
So much to learn.

Nice cover. Interesting how it took an entire month for the cover to be returned to sender.

I suspect the Santa Rosa cancel on the front is the date it was mailed; the Chico duplex cancel on the back is the date it was received. When it was determined to have to be returned to sender, the Chico duplex cancel on the face of the cover was the date it was mailed; and the Santa Rosa cancel on the reverse the date it was received back at the originating post office.

Speaking of the sender, here's a biography of the sender of the cover, H.W.A. Weske:

Here's an interesting side note: Did you notice that the Chico, CA duplex cancel on the reverse of the cover has the date inverted? It looks like "21" when, in fact, it should read "12". It is correctly shown as "12" on the Chico, CA duplex cancel on the front of the cover!

wt1,
Wow, thanks for the info! I didn't, of course, notice the inverted date. Very cool.
Mr. Weske was an impressive dude! I wonder if local historians would be interested in this cover. Interestingly, we're getting ready to move to Sonoma. I'll check with the library there!
