I didn't want to hijack essayk's beautiful thread on the essays so I mad my own thread.

I'm blown away with this presentation essayk! I look forward to reading the new posts every day. I wish I had the funds to do these but I'll leave these to the experts! I am diligently searching for #65-E15h
"Premiere Gravure" Plate Essay on
semi-transparent paper
Perf. 12 - gummed
"August Issue".
National Banknote Co.

It's basically a #64-65 without the balls on the ends of the frame. I believe it's considered an essay in the catalogs. I'll snag an image from the Swedish Tiger to show you.

Here ya go, http://stampauctionnetwork.com/hs/hs9853.cfm

lot 1321. Starting bid is $130. closes tomorrow.

They don't appear to be doing this one as a "live online bid" auction, so you may need to contact them directly about the lot. Otherwise you could use an agent like Frank Mandel or Jonathan Orenstein at Purser.

Update: they are in Milwaukee for Stampshow 2013 and have given a Wisconsin phone number for telephone bids. You can get that number from the outgoing message on the phone number they list on the sale information page, which oddly does not mention that they will be calling it at the show. Anyway, the link I gave you will get you started.

My bid will be in by early morning! Again, thank you VERY much.

Here is the image from the website posted above. I'd be happy with that but if by chance I would run across a Die Essay on India
Sunk on Card
I would most certainly go for that instead!

Here is a page from the famous Falk Finkelburg collection auction from over a decade ago that should get you drooling.

The die items don't come by that often.
Here you will find some of the Finkelberg items in the first Lakeshore sale of 2005:

ILS, You can bid on that stamp live on bidstart during the auction. I can't remember if there is any additional work to getting registered if you are already a registered bidstart user. I have participated in their bidstart auctions and it works pretty well.

Yes, I just found the link for that too.

This is by far the best way to go, since you can flex with the action. Second best is to ask to do phone bidding.

The WORST way to go for it is to leave a bid and become part of "the Book."

You was talking about that baby and mother on a fractional currency note and I though you may be interested in seeing this. The design of #5 & #10 may have been from a similar source?

Short answer: yes on the one cent, no on the three cent; kind of. But technically "no" all the way around. I have the Canal Bank $10 note as well. Swedish tiger has given the lineage in a confusing way that is a bit misleading.

Toppan, Carpenter & Co, engraved those two vignettes back in the 1840's, most probably by Charles Toppan himself. When John Casilear joined the firm and started working on the designs for the 1851 primary denominations (3c and 6c) he originally used both vignettes. But after a rate restructure redefined the primary rates to 1c and 3c, the 6c design became the 1c. The design for the 3c was trashed in favor of a completely different concept, and a different vignette was preferred. The new vignette is a different engraving entirely and not a simple rehash of the one from the bank note.

I'd go into it further, but we are getting ready to head for Stampshow this afternoon, and I have to attend to that. We'll be gone through Saturday. I will touch base with this thread when I get back.

So for now, I have to sign off.

Here is shot from my cellphone of a page from the 8 frame 1861-68 issues on display in the Court of Honor at Stampshow that I thought might interest you.

Please forgive the poor quality image, which I had to touch up to get rid of the reflections of the overhead lights. Couldn't find an angle that got them all out when I took the shot.

This exhibit belongs to my friend Richard Drews, who has been collecting these issues forever, and has just about everything that is available (but not a 1c Z-grill).

Quick follow-up. The lot in the Harmer-Schau sale sold for it's start bid of $180. That seems to be typical for these in this grade which I would call average to fine.

Essayk,

I'm new to this forum, but read your interesting post of 8/8/13 relating to John Casilear's work on 1851 TCC series, and would like to continue this discussion point. Should a new thread be started? Please give me a heads-up here as I am not sure about forum protocols.

A new thread that focuses on your particular interest is best. You can frame it as an inquiry or as an observation or however you like. I'll be glad to share whatever I can.
