it is hard for me to see a grill....but I am certainly not an expert...if you can put it under watermark fluid in a dark watermark tray it may show up better for you...photos do not always show things well.. |

Sounds like an E or F grill, make sure of your count and re-post. You must have 18 horizontal rows for a Z grill. |

Thanks for the replies I have counted 13 points as a base and a height of 17-18 unfortunately the picture is not clear and does not bring out the holes

Can't really tell from pic but I can see somewhere around 11x15. Some of the more knowledgeable people will jump in and let you know. |

A 14x17 grill appears on both E and Z grills but there are two distinguishing features. First is size: E grills measure 11x13 mm and Z grill is 11x14. The second, and indisputable, feature for a Z grill are the horizontal ridges. Of all the grills produced, only Z grills have have horizontal ridges.

Even with the aid of your marking the ridges, they are unclear which I believe is due to a weak grill impression. Get a Bill Weiss certificate and if he verifies it as a Z grill, then a second but more expensive certificate would be in order. |

I think it is worth repeating that a Z grill must have 18 horizontal rows of points. One common technique used to view grills is to take a pencil and scribble a patch of lead onto a piece of paper. You then take your finger tip and transfer some of that lead from the paper to your finger. Then lightly rub your finger across the grill on the back of the stamp. The raised portion of the grill will catch the lead and make it show up better. Your grill will show up like the ones in the following picture. [/URL] |

sinclair2010 I see my error. Some Z grills have 17 horizontal rows of points. The 85D has only 18 as you stated. Thanks for pointing that out. (Pun intended.)
