I'm a New Zealander with a US collection but much more specialised knowledge about NZ than US. I see that US 1857 issues are like 1855 NZ Full Face Queens and extensively studied.
Can anyone help with what this one might be? - my Scott Catalogue is not quite definitive enough.

While I'm sure someone will pop in and tell you the Scott number I would like to give you a link to a great site that deals specifically with this design for future reference. It's good to have on hand as these can get quite tricky! -Jeff

It is at least a #22 and possibly a #21. The stamp needs to be plated to be sure. Your image isn't good enough for plating this particular position.

I agree that it's a type III or IIIa. The cancel and tight left side are going to make it difficult to plate. Like stated above, a higher resolution scan might help. Lovely Stamp !
