One of several purchases at the York, PA stamp browse. First is a cover with Scott #35 Fall River, MS cds dated Jan 10, 1860 to Nova Scotia arriving Jan 20 then onto Picton, Nova Scotia on the 21st.

Interesting is the curved marking "....tes" perhaps someone can help out with determining what it actually says? perhapes "United States"? With a "C" in the middles. I think its just too faint to determine.

It probably says "U STATES", a well known marking of the period. However you will have to wait for one of the postal history collectors to tell any info on it. Although I have seen them before I know nothing about them.

The horseshoe cancel starts with an 'M' it looks like and ends with an 'ES', so maybe a ship marking or something?

The address to Nova Scotia and the right hand back reception cancel reads PICTOU.

The other Nova Scotia (I presume) cancel I cannot make out. Seems similar to the Noca Scotia one though.

The red marking is tracing number 26 on page 317 of Simpson's U.S. Postal Markings 1861-1861. It is listed as having been used on the Boston, Portland, Me. costal steamer from 1858-61. Rarity factor 5 (on a 1-10 scale).

Tracing below.

The M is part of the Fall River MS cancel, not the horseshoe marking.

An unfortunate mis-identification by me, of the M. Sorry to confuse.
