Early US postage stamps are given a value when used on cover. Sometimes the value is significantly more. I have to wonder why no values are given in Scotts Specialized for revenue stamps used on document. I suspect that the value would be determined based on the time of use, type of document, partial or complete document etc. understandable perhaps but not very helpful. Perhaps it's just too difficult to determine?

There are too many variables, and in many cases the difference is minimal. Bisects, certain specialty areas (such as match & medicine related), and some of the scarcer stamps bring a real premium, but for most others there are plenty of examples around.
To Scott, revenues are an afterthought anyway, introductions such as the one before the match & medicine section prove their lack of both understanding and real knowledge. It's a very "one size fits all" approach that has no genuine relevance to what actually exists and the condition they exist in in many cases.

Revcollector, there are, as you probably know, may variables with regular stamps on covers too. Scott doesn't, understandably, get into that quagmire either. But they do list in generalities and in some cases, especially in the early classics, some cover varities. I agree with you that Scott really isn't giving the "back of the book" the same treatment that it does the front. EDUs aren't dealt with either. My question is, are you and other who have the knowledge and expertize in revenues, and other parts of the back of the book, working with Scott to get them to bring that portion of the catalogue into line with the rest of the book? I'd think there could be a better interest in collecting there if it were?

When I tried a few years ago the answer I got was a polite "that is beyond the scope of the catalog". Which of course covers anything they don't wish to do. On document listings on the first three issues are not coming as a listing any time in the near future, if ever. Or shade varieties on the first issue. Or a real multiplier for the match & medicines instead of the generic (and very frequently wrong) 50% to 300% of catalog values for sound examples. Some stamps under $20 should be 10X cat if sound and some $2500 stamps should be listed as sound and damaged stamps should be discounted.

I think the back should be given as much attention as the front! The art is much better and the designs speak for theirselves. A lot of stuff going on there and I say before to long there will be a lot more as I think collecting will go this way. Kind of wide open and more people are getting into the back. But the again I'm a Newby

I'm more surprised that there isn't a specialist catalog that would cover use on document, or is there ? Do other Counties Revenue catalogs cover document usage ?

I'm sort of surprised that you Revenue collectors don't put your heads together and lay down some guidelines and criteria {like a Scott's catalog} explaining about whats what in the scope of revenue collecting. I guess what I'm saying is in effect why don't you make a compendium of sorts for your field of expertise? like I said, create a Revenue collecting compendium/catalog?
