I'm moved this cover from the shoe box to the album because I love how it has four fairly balanced margins. Seems with these that's harder to find than on some other issues. I read somewhere this cancel is made for the center circle to actually cut into the stamp. Note, I'm going to mark this as 65 rose red.

Yes, the cancel is a patent punch cancel, intended to break the paper. Very nice to have also tied on the cover! |

There were a few of these cancels in this same lot I picked up at a local auction some time ago. None of them appear to have been actually cut by the center of the cancel. All of them are 'messy' like this one. Looks like the ink was watery. Not a very handsome cancel. That one is the best of the lot. |

orstampman, see E-Bay listings: 200733420963 & 370843673455. Two I've on my watch list. I think they may be a bit pricey, but maybe not. stampcrow, if you what to sell or trade some, I'd also be interested in getting a couple more than I have now. Interesting article on this patented cancel. I think I read it on the philamercury web site? |

Stampcrow- I wouldn't call that one rose red. I can't see the exact shade, but in '63, it could be lilac rose or pale lilac rose, or it could be the "Brooklyn Pink" that I've mentioned a few times, which is #65 and is technically pinkish rose. Here is pale rose red (from '65): Here is rose red (from '62): Here is a pastel rose (from '63): Here is a pale lilac rose (from '63): Again, can't see yours well because it's not very big, but the intensity would remind me of either the pastel rose or the pale lilac rose, which would both be fairly common shades from '63 (both have a rarity factor = 3 out of 9). Do these help? Hope so! Ray |

I'm at work at this time. Later I will scan the other covers I have with this cancel. I have some 65's off cover I will scan also. I'm not really comfortable selling any here. If I remember correctly they aren't in great condition. At any rate, if inetersted, I wouldn't mind sharing them free of charge. Orstampman would have first dibs. You may not be interested once I scan them and that's ok also.
ray.mac I can't view the images on this computer. I will at home. I will also re-scan, just the stamp on my cover, for a better look. |

Al E. Gator - thanks for the ebay listing references. The Albany is interesting, but still a bit pricy for me. I am looking only for on-cover examples at this time. I already have a Rochester, NY on cover. I have Albany, New York and a few others off cover. Disi - thanks for the heads-up on the 50% off. stampcrow - thanks for your consideration - I would be also interested in trading if you're not comfortable selling. -dave |

ray.mac, here is a more close up image of the stamp. My 2009 Scott specialized only lists colors of: rose, bright rose, dull red, or rose red. And I just noticed down the column further is brown red, pale brown red, dull brown red and deep pinkish rose. |

So here are the other covers I have with this cancel. As you can see none of them are without issue. This first one I think is the nicest but you only get half the cancel. It does appear to be tied on the right and the stamp is the best condition of the three. This next one the cancel is somewhat fuller but the stamp is chewed on the right. I guess it can be called tied to the cover. This last one has the best cancel but the worst stamp. It doesn't appear to be tied to the cover. You are welcome to any one of these. |

Here are a couple singles off paper. The brown is just a sheet I laid over them for the scan. With the left stamp, the center punch actually did push the paper so the back shows a raised circle without cutting through. |

Hi stampcrow - thank you for your offer. I am interested in the second one - please let me know what you may want in trade for it. You can email me off the board.
Thanks!

By the way, these are very nice examples of the patent cancels (on and off cover). The ink and impressions are clear. Thanks for the views! |
