I recently picked up a collection that had a very extensive holding of Chinese stamps, pre-WWII. There are a lot of the Sun Yat Sen and Martyrs series that are overprinted that need to be identified, as the previous owner didn't bother doing so; he only gave them separate pages and mounted them there whenever he got one; nothing is really in order, although it is separate.
I've been using Scott to try to identify them as much as possible, but it is extremely tedious--look at the sample illustration, look down the list, double-check to make sure the overprint is exactly the same, etc. Does anyone know of a website where identification is easier? Maybe somewhere where they show the basic stamp of that value, then all the overprints that can be on it, and identify them?
That sounds like a good, very practical idea. I am afraid that you will have to make such an identification site yourself, pretty sure that Scott has not done anything to make it easier. I do not have a Michel for China, so I can not comment on their approach.
However, I thought Scott placed text references to overprints under the main listings?
Yeah, there are text references, but it's all "See also #'s xx-xx, yy-yy, zz, and ..." with very few pictures overall. An easier way would be to picture each basic stamp that has an overprint and then just list the new amount surcharges and the catalogue number of the amended stamp, all in a chart form, but I guess this would be too much to ask for...
Anyway, I got it done. It was a long and tedious job, though.
