Hello, I am new to stamps and I was recently acquired a fairly large world wide collection. I took photos and made a list of all of the US stamps included and was hoping someone would be able to help with some information. Is there any way to tell if the collection includes anything rare or desirable? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am a bit lost at the moment. Here is a link to a photo album of the stamps:

That's a big list. Finding anything of significant value is going to take a long time. You can start here: http://1847usa.com/

Do you want to keep the collection or sell it? If you give us your location then someone may know a reputable dealer near you.

Glancing through your album, if this one is real it could be worth several hundred to several thousands of dollars. Can you take a better picture or preferably scan it?

GAHT, welcome to this forum. That is a very long list, and a lot of pictures to look through. The 'Historical DNA Collector" gave some pretty good advise, however I would advise you to look for a local stamp club. Dealers, reputable as they may be have a tendency to give a low estimate. A local stamp club member may see something of value and suggest a more profitable way to dispose! If you let us know the general area you live you may have one of our members ring in!
Good luck,

Peter

You went to a lot of trouble making that list and all those images. They give a pretty good sense about what you have. Whoever put that collection together left it at a late phase of what used to be called a 'schoolboy" collection. That is, the kind of collection young people used to be able to assemble from the comparatively low cost stamps they got from approval dealers. The owner mostly dabbled in stamps, but did not get to the point of a really serious interest, at least as far as this album goes.

If your interest is in cashing out, then there is little to fall back on here. If however you want to pick up where they left off, then there are plenty of online and print references to help you, and making connections here is a good start at that.

Thanks so much for the replies. I have this collection on ebay at the moment but I am thinking about canceling the auction because I would like to find out more. I am located about 30 min outside of Philadelphia PA. I also have a worldwide collection and many first day covers. I would really like to sell them as stamps are not really my hobby. I figure these would be better off in the hands of someone who can appreciate them (even if there is nothing too great included).

Historical DNA Collector, these were passed down through a couple of generations of collectors so I would assume that everything is real. Should I try to remove it from the page to take a better photo? I don't want to risk damaging it.

Thanks again everyone.

I would not worry about ebay too much. If you have pictures, they will sell for a reasonable percentage of true worth. However looking at your list true worth might be nothing of great value. And yes, I also recommend taking it to a local stamp club for a look-see before doing anything.

Any other thoughts on the stamp that Historical DNA Collector mentioned as potentially being valuable?

Here are some more photos. Unfortunately I don't have a scanner at the moment. If there is a better way to get a good photo please feel free to let me know. I can't seem to get too close and still have the shot be in focus. There is a number written faintly on the back of the stamp. It is difficult to read but I tried to include it in the photos. Thanks.

Even experienced collectors can be fooled by very good fakes.

Take it to somewhere to have them scan it. Tell them to be very gentle with it and only hold it by the paper that it is mounted to.

Do you have a relative with a scanner? Kinkos, any copying center, and even some grocery stores have scanners.

You'll need to bring a thumb usb drive with you with at least 30 MB capacity. Call ahead to wherever you're going and ask them if you can get a scan of something and put it on your thumb drive. They also may be able to burn it to a cd for an additional charge.

Make sure they scan it at 600 dpi or higher. 1200 or 2400 dpi would allow for a closer look. If it's cheap, have them do it a few times to try to get a better image.

If it turns out that it could be real, you could send the scan to an expertiser. They are trained to make expert opinions on the quality, identify which type it is, and to spot fakes. One of the members here runs a service for a quick opinion for $5 or the APS for $10. Both are good.

An expertiser will tell you if it's worth sending your stamp off for the more pricey authentication service.

Chances of it being real are very slim, but it's worth trying.

Also, I don't think that you can cancel an ebay auction easily if it has bids already. So make your decision now.

Based on completed auctions it doesn't look like that stamp is worth more than a couple of hundred dollars at the most.

Here is a link to download the PDF

That is the best quality that I can do at this time. Unfortunately it is still probably not high enough resolution but give it a shot.
