Hello everyone, I recently discovered an old stamp album which has quite a few stamps in it, particularly the US pages also Germany france and england. It is above titled album copyright 1950. I expect most are common but if anyone is familiar with this album I would appreciate if there are any rare spots to look for. I understand if you are tired of these types of posts but where does a novice guy go for straight answers. I figured this is my best bet, Matt

Hi Matt......
Welcome to the club.
Generally speaking.......the oldest US and European stamps could have some value, depending on condition. If you could post some pictures we could give you a better idea of what you have. The odds say that you will not find any with real value......but, the possibility does exist.
Another possible option is that as you investigate you might find yourself interested enough to develop your own collection.

Welcome to the stamp community, Stampman! Most libraries have a set of Scott's Catalogues you could use to identify your stamps. This is a seven volume set which lists values for stamps of all countries. Also, as Tom suggested, a few pictures or scans of the oldest stamps will give us a good idea of what is there. |

Welcome Stampman...Ah, the joys of discovery. Where did you 'discover' this old jewel? There is always a chance to discover a missed treasure. It still happens with surprising frequency but, the safest bet is to enjoy the stamps for what they are and much of that enjoyment can be derived in the journey of identification and cataloging as cited above. That being said be assured there are folks on this forum to respond to any questions you may have. |

Well I collect sports items, and I think I picked this up years ago in with a box of old sports magazines. I forgot all about it until digging through all my old crap. Just came back from Borders after looking over stamp books, very confusing It is a hundred times more confusing than looking up old sports cards. I will post pics eventually, I am a chronic procrastinator. |

Concerning the USA stamps what stamps do you have prior to 1900, maybe you have some dates for these stamps.
The album itself is not worth too much if anything but maybe you might have a few money stamps. |

Quote: I recently discovered an old stamp album which has quite a few stamps in it, particularly the US pages also Germany france and england Hi stampman, and welcome...Just by the heavy concentration in the countries you mention, I would guess that they are common stamps. But you never know.. See if you have one of these in your England section |

I dont have that one, but I have been researching, and I do have the US locomotive stamp I believe 1869, I saw that they reissued later. What does having a grill mean? |

Stampman.....
A grill is a pattern pressed into the paper, similar to a waffle pattern.
One of my free offers for new members here is a stamp from Peru that is grilled and is almost identical to one type of US grill. I offer them absolutely free, I even pay postage. If you would like one, post a note here and we can exchange emails so I can get your address.
TonyG.....the stamp you posted seems vaguely familiar to me. |

Thanks for posting, That is the same stamp a 3c locomotive. I have to say it is pretty interesting, but I am surprised how little $ value there are for many stamps pre 1900. Must be that there were so many collectors in the early 1900's. |
