Very Nice Ones Tom.

Here is one that makes you think. Imagine the poor pilot back then with no GPS or electronics of the flights today. He had to fly by compass and city lights or light beacons, Plus the airports runways most times were not lite.

Night Flight

That one is great with the plate number single. You just hit the nail on the head with the fancy cancel. The biplane is my favorite ones. I posted a bunch of the fancy cancels here.

If anyone starts to collect the First Flight Covers you are eventually going to run into some of the premium ones like the Roessler covers.

Absolutely lovely covers, folks. I collect FFC's (First Flight Covers), Aeroport Dedication covers, and pretty well anything else air mail, from Texas.

NR asked:

Why does/did Montreal use an "H" ?

I do not know. They are duplex cancels similar to the ones the U.S.P.O.D. used (I collect those ones on air mail stamp--you know, numbers, letters, etc.) I suppose the letters indicated the clerk or route, but I am only guessing.

If someone knows more about Montréal duplex cancels, we'd love to hear about them.

I do know that most of the duplex cancels from Montréal were used in the Small Queen era... that's why this one stood out for me... it's a late usage (or perhaps a favour cancel?)

FAM.....First Air Mail.

A correction....

Air mail routes within the U.S. are called CAMs... CONTRACT AIR MAIL ROUTES.

Air mail routes originating in the U.S. and flying to/from foreign countries are called FAMs... FOREIGN AIR MAIL ROUTES.

Being a new beginner, I am just curious.....How can you get one of these first flight envelopes before? Was it by chance that the letters were mailed during the first flights or was it by intention so it was much expensive? THanks

John....

First Flights were scheduled, in some cases announced so dealers and collectors had time to prepare for them. Larger companies had contacts in the airlines and some still do....even with NASA....and they create special covers that are sometimes flown on shuttle flights.

I don't have alot of FDC's but I do like most of the airmails......these were not carried on a shuttle, but they are cancelled at the Kennedy Space Center.
