I had a feeling you might be bidding on that Burrell cancel so I went for one of the Brady's instead.
And I thank you for doing that.

I already have several examples of the script "Brady" and the scarcer companion "Washington" cancels by Matthew Brady.
Eric's auctions are a good way to feel out the real value of items. Both Eric and Richard price their stock at retail plus (occasionally retail+++++) so one sometimes questions what the "real world" value is on items. Eric had not one, but two of the Brady cancels in this last auction (I would personally not have run two of them in the same auction, as you are potentially cutting your results significantly).
Eric and Richard price the Brady script between $400 and $500 in retail stock. With two in the auction, one ended up at $380 and the other at $390, which is right on the money.
This particular D.T. Burrell shield cancel is not one I've seen before. What gives me a clue as to its scarcity is that Bruce Baryla did not have one in his gold medal Civil War Sun Picture Tax exhibit, despite having several examples of shield photographer cancels and this one being more ornate than the ones he did showcase. If he had one, it likely would have been in the exhibit, as he had some amazingly scarce photographer-related items.
http://web.newsguy.com/bruceb/london/exhibit01.htmThe collection/exhibit is broken up and gone now, but at least Bruce imaged the exhibit for posterity, something that far too few exhibitors do (e.g., the Mike Morrissey exhibit of 2nd and 3rd issue revenues was not imaged before Richard started breaking it up).
